inspired by penultimate pea's great sculpted figures, i decided to try my hand at working with sculpey.
i've got a head so far and a few ideas for other things but i'm not really sure how to go about adding the body & appendages. do i try to sew clothes for him or sculpt them? (i don't know how to sew so that might be an issue)
also, i'm having trouble painting. the colors are okay until they dry then they look weird. i'm just using craft paint so that might be an issue. another problem with the paint is how different it looks in different light. oh well, chalk it all up to experience.
this is the head from the other night. it was kinda dark so the picture came out crappy. i still need to work on his eyes but i think i need to concentrate more on the rest of him for a while.

awesome!! i don't think it looks blobby at all, and the color looks fine to me (but yeah, lighting makes all the difference). i think craft paint is just a thin acrylic, so the only thing i can think of is that almost all paint looks weird to me straight from the tube/bottle…i usually mix colors pretty heavily, and almost always add a bit of the complementary color (a bit of red to green etc.) to make the colors a little less bright/manufactured looking.
i can't quite tell what kind of base you've got coming from the neck at the moment, but for the body i usually use a double strand of wire (twisted) for the body, and split it for the legs. i use a single strand for the arms, and have tried attaching it various ways…foil, wire, plumber's epoxy, just sculpey…they all work okay in the end.
can't wait to see more of this guy as he progresses!
I like this one a lot. I really love the idea of actual cloth clothes. Maybe you could play a little bit with fabric? I guess it depends on what he's wearing too. Would he be wearing a toga or maybe a sci-fi supersuit?
Would that be easier or harder than sculpting the folds of fabric? :)
i like him. i can't wait to see the progress and the handmade, hand-stitched clothes! :)
Very cool.
I love ZDs comment... sew away!!
I think it's a great start. Looking forward to seeing the rest!
