long pose

i had completely forgotten that i bought some new pencils a few months ago with the intention of trying to get myself to draw in a different way. it was a nice surprise to find them again (still unsharpened) and it was timely too since last week i felt that i needed a broader range of values in my drawing materials. since it seems that i'm forgetting all sorts of things this week, the pencils were no exception. i meant to bring them with me to work and i had to scurry home at lunch to grab them (bonus was i got to have the yummy soup e and i made last night as well). i'm not sure if it's just that i'm not used to them yet or what but drawing seemed to progress much slower tonight than it has in the past. was i taking things easier since i knew the same model was going to be back next week? i dunno. anyway, i wasn't really happy with the vantage point i decided to use so i might change it next week, just for giggles.

my new pencils:

my workout

i had a late afternoon desire to go to the gym. so i did.

saturday

after my run yesterday, i sat around the house. not really doing much beyond looking at blogs and reading online comics like this one. i really needed to get to the grocery store so i finally pryed myself out into the world. the bad thing about going so long between shopping trips is that i spent a ton of money on things i probably really didn't need. it's times like this i wish i were better in the kitchen (not that way, pervert). i end up buying simple canned things, ramen, and other foods that don't require cooking. not fresh meats and veggies.
after i got everything home i was cold but it wasn't that cold outside, it's just that i was feeling a little lonely and i was craving a nap with e and it was a little cloudy/rainy. not sure why that made me cold but it did. e had to do some shopping and eat lunch so when she finally got to my place, i didn't let her get more than a couple of words out before i took her by the hand into the bedroom and took off her clothes. i think i was asleep within 10 minutes. it felt weird to crave cuddling but i did. and i needed it bad.
after our nap, we surfed a bit and talked a lot. we decided on dinner and a movie and got out in the rain. the food at pasand is good but the service was terrible! we sat for over 20 minutes waiting for our check so we ended up just going to the front counter and waiting there. we each had a tahli (chana masala for her, aloo ghobi for me). then off to see brokeback mountain. we both decided that the movie didn't develop the character's love enough. neither one of us could empathize with why they had this drive to continue to see each other. e said she felt they were being selfish by doing what they were doing and messing up other peoples lives at the same time. i just chalked it up to the era and the circumstances. it really was a long movie for such a limited storyline and i think that's what bugged us both. it was pretty good but not one we'd see again. it'll be interesting to see what it wins at the oscars.
even though we were both extremely tired, we stayed up past midnight discussing the movie and just talking. i love that we can do that.

workout log

e woke me up this morning by ringing my doorbell. she was already out running and decided to stop by. i love running with her so i threw on my sneakers and hopped outside. it's rather amazing what your body can do if you're in the right frame of mind and in this case, set a good pace. 7.2 miles is the farthest i've ever ran. thanks for waking me up e.

alrighty then. here's my second shot at the wonderful spf. let's see what kristine has decided that she wants to see.
we've got:
- my toys
- my secret
- my eyes

so here we go...

long pose

i went to the long pose drawing class tonight. somewhat happy with the result. i'm still having trouble with the medium. i use a regular 2b pencil and i can't get blacks out of it but then when i try to use a 6b, i lose all the detail because the lead is so soft. i'm sure i probably just need to take an actual class that would teach me the proper way to do this but finding the class and having time for it are two different things. and there's no way i'm going to use charcoal. i can't stand the way it feels against the paper (and i don't really like having my hands all messy).

i've already decided to take the sculpture class this coming session and i'm debating on whether or not to take the figure painting class. i'm fairly comfortable with my ability in drawing and sculpture but with oils, i flounder. i have a feeling there will be some extremely talented artists enrolled and the last time, i got so frustrated just by looking from my painting to the person next to me. gar! why can't painting come to me very easily? i think it looks like a lot of fun and i think i could make some really interesting stuff but maybe i just need to hold out until they offer a basic/intermediate class.
i'll most likely not take it since i'll have the sculpture class, & the 2 drop in drawing classes. that's plenty in one week, right? i don't need to overdo it.

anyway...

busy busy busy

e and i have had a full couple of days. we started out friday night by going out to eat at one of our favorite burmese eateries; nan yang. we had the green tea salad, the hot and sour soup and the garlicky noodles with mango. a truly wonderful meal. after that, we had tickets to go see part of the sf comedy sketchfest. the first part of the show was "showgirls: the best movie ever made! ever!" and the second part was the naked babies doing 45 minutes of improv. did i mention that this didn't start until 10:30? i'm usually in bed (or at least close to it) by then!
the first part was hilarious. e really enjoyed the actual movie and this was total icing for her. they even read some of the unedited stage direction and that was amazingly bad. the second improv part wasn't quite as funny but it still had its moments. rob corddry was part of this group and he's a lot shorter in person than i thought he would be.
we got back to my place and in bed by 2:00am (yikies!) and slept for only 6 hours before we had to get up and ready to look at a few apartments. we saw a total of 3 on saturday. so quickly after looking at places, i went to workout and e went home to nap. in retrospect, i maybe should have napped as well. she came back over to my place at 4:30 so we could get our costumes on for the edwardian ball. we also had reservations for greens at 6:00. it turns out it takes a lot longer to get dressed and put on makeup than i had alotted so we didn't end up leaving my place until 5:45. traffic on the bridge was super slow but we did okay and made it to the restaurant only 30 minutes late.
the food was delicious, the meal was prix fix so we had way too much food and i was quite stuffed as we left. it was also kinda fun to be dressed up in costume and go to a normal place to eat. we got all sorts of looks.
the edwardian ball was pretty cool. neither of us had been before and it was kind of a spur of the moment thing. i think it was more of a fashion show as people were wandering about to see and be seen. they had a large ballroom floor where people were dancing but e and i hovered on the edge, sipping our drinks and swaying a little to the music. we were both disappointed that the burlesque show didn't start until midnight and we both knew there was no way we were going to make it that long. so we stayed almost 2 hours and split. all in all, i think we'd do it again, but now we know a little more of what to expect.
we woke up sunday morning to head to another apt. sadly, it wasn't very impressive. then we both went for a run outdoors. it was nice to get outside and i think we both pushed ourselves a little. that's good.
we've got a couple more apts go to today and one of them might hold some promise so we're both optimistic.
whew what a weekend!

spf

saw this over at now seriously and thought it looked like fun plus i needed an excuse to get the camera out. so kristine is looking for photos of: my lotions, my towels, & my toothbrush. i had to try the "arty" shots since... well... i dunno, i'm arty? so without further ado, i bring you a guys perspective on the spf.

1. my lotions - okay, i'm a guy. i really don't feel the need to have lotions and stuff but i am bald so i do need protection from the uv's and whatnot. i'm wondering if lotion on my head makes me more streamlined or wind resistant? oh well. so i've got the neutrogena moisturizer/sun block thingy. it's nice in that it's not greasy and it's not smelly. the origins "a perfect world" stuff i got for christmas from my mom. she gave me and my brother an origins sample kit and so far, it's pretty nice. i don't use it everyday but i try to. gotta look good for my lady, ya know.

2. my towels - mine are the harmony micro cotton towels from earthsake. after i moved into my place, my mom wanted to give me a "housewarming" item or at least get me something i needed and i was on the prowl for the perfect towel. so, we stopped by earthsake (because i'm one of those folks that tries to be friendly to the planet) and picked these up. they also have the !softest! sheets i've ever felt and some really great smelling soy candles.

3. my toothbrush - like a lot of folks, my hygienist suggested i try an electronic toothbrush as they're supposed to be better for your teeth and gums. the one she was pushing was the sonicare. i've used it for the past 3 years or so and i really like it. the nicest feature is the quadpacer. it gives a little sound every 30 seconds so you can make sure you cover each quadrant of your mouth well. the biggest drawback is that you can't really use it on long vacations unless you take the charger with you. i also have a regular toothbrush i use as well but it didn't find it's way to the photoshoot.

there ya go.

i sweat like a girl

so i went to the gym today @ 6:50 am. out of 8 people, i was the only guy! what's up with that? do guys just not wake up as early as girls? is this a common thing? are there more guys at the gym in the evenings? very odd if you ask me.

girlfriend with benefits

one of the funny things about having e stay overnight is that i get up way earlier than i normally would. this is nice in that i can use it to my advantage and go to the gym. it has also had the effect of making me tired earlier but i'm not complaining about that at all.
i know i could easily stay in bed when she leaves but i'd rather walk her to her car since the streets are kinda deserted (and i don't live in the best neighborhood). plus i get one last kiss in before she goes and that's always nice.
i think i hear my poptarts are ready, off to they gym!

gushing a little

today marked six months with e. i've never had a better time with anyone. we get along so well and i feel like we really connect when we talk about things, even if they're trivial. our conversations just flow and we're always crossing topics left and right, not wanting to leave out any odd thought that strays into our heads. i'm really surprised we met online. i had no idea it was possible to meet someone i was this compatible with on the interwebby. it just seems that i'm blessed. i'm so happy being with her.

we cooked our favorite soup tonight. we added twice the called for garlic and red pepper and also threw in a few serrano chilis. we were both a little overcome by the soup base while it was cooking since the peppers seemed to be giving off something that made us cough. it burned off a bit and gave us a really nice slow spiciness after we served up a couple of bowls. we're such light-weights, we were both pretty buzzy off 1 1/2 margaritas a piece (maybe i make them strong?). and we're both very sleepy... oops, she's actually asleep, must type quietly.

happy wednesday to all... and thanks e.

back in the swing of things

the weekly long pose class i try to attend started back up tonight after the holiday hiatus. it was good to get back to drawing. i felt super rusty and i'm not happy with my pencil. anyway, figured i'd blog the outcome from these classes for posterity.
i only stayed for a couple of hours tonight (out of a possible 4) and this is what i ended up with:

hrmm. now that i look at that photo, i think i need a scanner. sorry!

my name is jayfish... and i'm an addict

e sent me a news article that pointed to these chocolatey sites:

cowgirl chocolates. check out the flavors of their truffle bars!
cocoa bella. again, look at the flavors in their exotic assortment!
vosges chocolate. ahhh fun flavors of chocolate bars!
and lastly, we live pretty close to lulu rae. i can't wait to go!

gak! i'm craving chocolate now... i can eat it for lunch, right?

is it wrong?

to want to go outside and smash the hell out of a car that's been blasting it's alarm for the past hour and a half?

luckily, i don't own a baseball bat.

...i do have a set of barbells though. hmmm.

runny

extra long run today. i kinda wanted to make sure i could do another 10k since we signed up for it. i'll probably drop back down to shorter runs to keep from killing my knees. and i'll continue to cross-train to try and build up the muscles around the knees. running sure feels good though.

total time - 60'00'
total distance - 6.5 miles
average heart rate - 150
calories burned - 718

i pushed e a little today and made her run 6.7 miles. when we run together, she runs a little faster than normal and i run a little slower. my long legs help in giving me a faster pace and i think that frustrates her a bit. i really like running with her and hope she doesn't get so tired running with me that she just stops altogether.

i'm extra sweaty, i need a shower!

i need to travel more

Your Stipper Song Is

Baby Got Back by Sir Mix-A-Lot

"So Cosmo says you're fat
Well I ain't down with that!
'Cause your waist is small and your curves are kickin'"

You've got a boomin' body, and you're not afraid to show it off.

this is why i don't watch tv

carl's jr spot

warning, not for the faint of heart!

i've always been average

Joe Normal
34 % Nerd, 17% Geek, 17% Dork

For The Record:

A Nerd is someone who is passionate about learning/being smart/academia.
A Geek is someone who is passionate about some particular area or subject, often an obscure or difficult one.
A Dork is someone who has difficulty with common social expectations/interactions.

You scored less than half in all three, earning you the title of: Joe Normal.

This is not to say that you don't have some Nerd, Geek or Dork inside of you--we all do, and you can see the percentages you have right above. This is just to say that none of those qualities stand out so much as to define you. Sure, you enjoy an episode of Star Trek now and again, and yeah, you kinda enjoyed a few classes back in the day. And, once in a while, you stumble while walking down the street even though there was nothing there to cause you to trip. But, for the most part, you look and act fairly typically, and aren't much of an outcast.

I'd say there's a fair chance someone asked you to take this test. In any event, fairly normal.

Congratulations!
THE NERD? GEEK? OR DORK? TEST

You scored higher than 12% on nerdiness

i got back on my skates today. it was cold but it felt pretty good. the sidewalks around here suck so it's a little tricky naviagating around. and there are way too many stop lights for me to keep up a constant heart rate but at least i got out.

the $350 mistake

don't ever lock yourself out of the house then hire an incompetent locksmith to screw up your lock just so you can pay a better locksmith to do that job correctly.

nope. it's not a good idea unless you just have oodles of money laying around.
...or if you like interacting with guys that might be casing your house.

flickr fun

johnathon coulton made a video featuring photos from flickr and set them to music with self-penned lyrics. i thought it was rather funny , but then again i've got an odd sense of humor. all the photos he used and his songs are creative commons licensed so share them everywhere.
17.2MB movie

his cover of baby got back is pretty funny. it kinda reminded me of ben folds' version of bitches ain't s**t.

btw, flickr's interesting photos is always an interesting source of inspiration if you're a hobbyist photo guy like me.
